Display an out-line map of the exodus area—either a simplehand drawn one or a commercial map. Tell yourrecruits you want them to close their eyes and letyou turn them around once before they approachthe map and put their token where they thinkthe children of Israel encamped for a year.Give each recruit a small (one-inch round)token with reusable adhesive applied to theback. Let each student adhere his or her "moun-tain" to the map. After all three are adhered, ask,"Which of these three tokens comes the closestto the mat mountain where God gave the law toMoses?" As noted by the lesson writer (see noteson verse 2), the true location remains disputed, but the traditional site is well known. Review theexodus from Egypt to the mount to establish thesetting for today's texts. Into the Word Prepare copies of the text below. Call this,"Today's text as copied by a nearsighted, carelessscribe." Ask the class to make corrections to theerror-filled text with their Bibles closed. In the third day when the children ofMoses were gone forth out of the land ofEngland, the same day they came into theforests of Sinai. For they were delayed atSeraphim and were come to the desserts ofSinai and had pitched their tents in thewilderness, and there they camped beforesunset. And Moses went over unto God, andthe Lord called him up the mountain, saying, This shalt thou say to the house ofAbraham, and tell the children of Aaron.Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptianarmy, and how I bare you on angels' wingsand brought you unto this place. Now,therefore, if you will hear my voice indeedand keep my laws, then ye shall get a spe-cial treatment from me above all people:for all the nations are mine. And ye shallbe unto me a kind of priest and wholly anation. These are the words which thoushalt present unto the children at Sinai. And Moses came and told the people allthe works of the Lord and all the require-ments: and all the people answered withone sound and said, All the things theLord bath said will we try to do. AndMoses copied all the words of the Lord, and rose up early in mourning, andbuilded a hill under the altar and 12 pil-lows, according to the 12 tributes of Israel. And he sent young children of the men ofIsrael, which burned offerings and stackedrice piece offerings and oxen unto theLord. And Moses took half of the bloodand poured it in barrels, and half of theblood he spread over the alter. And hetook the back of the covenant and repeatedit in the ears of the people. And they said, Part of all that the Lordbath said will we deny and be disobedient. And Moses took the blood and sprinkled iton the covenant, and said, Behold thecovenant, which the Lord bath mandatedto you concerning all these works. This can be a small-group activity, if desired. After students identify errors, have them opentheir Bibles to verify their corrections. Sharepoints from the commentary as appropriate. Into Life Have students turn to Hebrews 8, a passage af-firming the superiority of the new covenant inChrist. Read that short chapter responsively—you reading the odd-numbered verses and theclass reading the even-numbered. Ask studentshow they will live up to the holy status that theyhold in covenant with God in the week ahead.
