If you were to go back to that "specialplace" to reaffirm your initial commitment toChrist, where would it be and why? Those who live in mobile societies are often along distance from the place where they firstbegan a personal walk with God. For some thatplace could be at a Christian camp where a chal-lenge for Christian commitment was madearound a campfire. For others, it could be the oldhome church where they grew up. We makethese commitments sometimes in a hospitalemergency room or a surgical waiting room.Just as we may want to go back to a home wegrew up in and see what it looks like now, wealso have special attachments to those "spiritualhomes." They can be special, sacred ',laces be-cause of the significance of the event that hap-pened there. It's worth the trip to go back! 2.The people of Israel had a hard time lettinggo of some of the false gods they had been intro-duced to. We can have the same problem. Whatare some of the gods we hold on to? Why is it sohard to put away these gods? Idol-gods come in many shapes and sizes. These gods are anything that displaces the onetrue God and His desires. Sometimes an idol-god may come in the formof material possessions; at other times it may be acertain relationship we have with another per-son. It may be a job or a position we hold in thecommunity or the church. These are things wecan "put our hands on," so to speak. Thus theyare very real to us in our day-to-day lives. Bycontrast, the things that God considers impor-tant, such as a personal walk wills Him and act-ing by faith, can seem rather mystical at times. The fear of losing control is a very real reasonwhy we hold on to our "gods." 3.The Israelites made commitments to God inthe context of remembering God's blessings. What blessings has God given your church thatshould lead to even deeper commitments toHim? How can we make sure we count andrecount these blessings? Often we take for granted many of the thingsthat happen in our churches. The freedom we 4.Sometimes our actions belie our words. Inwhat ways can the things that we do devalueour promise of allegiance to God? How can wedo better? We used to sing a hymn that said, put Jesus first in my life." This is a promise that ourrelationship with God is more important thananything else. Then we allow recreational activities to takeprecedence over, say, a Bible study. When we arechallenged to give to help support a missionaryendeavor or to respond financially to a crisis sit-uation, we focus instead on that new car or newgadget that advertisers have convinced us wejust can't live without. Solutions will be individ-ual to each person, but undoubtedly all solutionsmust begin wills prayer. 5.In quick succession the people of Godoffered their allegiance to God four times. Howcan we follow their example in reaffirming ourdedication to God? We can first verbalize our commitment. Inpersonal testimonies or small group settings, wecan speak of ways we want to be more commit-ted in our walk with God and ask for others topray for us and hold us accountable. We then back up our talk with actually serv-ing others and obeying God. Keeping our eyesopen to steeds in our church and in our commu-nity where the love of Cluist needs to be madeknown is important. Service in the name ofChrist in a homeless shelter, a soup kitchen. oran organization to help children are ways we canrespond in obedience.
