Sunday School Lessons on Jesus

Into the Lesson

To introduce today's lesson, provide hymnalsfor the class and lead your students in singing,-All Glory, Laud and Honor." If a certain classmember is a good song leader, you may prefer tolet him or her lead.

Next, ask your class to identify the New Testa-ment event that is the basis of that hymn. If noone immediately guesses the triumphal entry orPalm Sunday, provide several clues: Jerusalem, palm branches, a colt, "Hosanna!" Once some-one has guessed the event or you have revealedthe answer, inform your class that today's lessondeals with the triumphal entry as it relates toJesus' divine kingship.

Into the Word

Use the Lesson Background material to ex-plain the setting of the lesson text. Then ask twoclass members to read Revelation 1:8 and Luke19:28-38 aloud. One student will read the narra-tion (Luke 19:28-30a, 32, 33a, 34a, 35-38a), theother the dialogue (Revelation 1:8; Luke 19:30b,31, 33b, 34b, 38b) in the passages. (You maywish to recruit your readers ahead of time, sothey have a chance to practice.)

After the reading, tell your students that thesetwo texts highlight sonic qualities of King Jesusthat point to Him as being unique among kings. To discover those qualities, have your studentswork independently to complete the matchingexercise below. This activity also is printed inthe student book. If you do not use the studentbook, you will need to make copies of the exer-cise to distribute to your class.

Each student should match the qualities withthe corresponding verses. Mention that a passagemay refer to more than one quality. Allow about10 minutes to complete the quiz.

Divide the class into groups of three or four. Each group will work on the same hypotheticalsituation below, using information from theGospel of Luke not limited to chapter 19) tobrainstorm a response designed to convince"Bob" that he should accept Christ as Savior.Bob is willing to admit that Christianity isprobably true. Nevertheless, he is unwilling tosurrender his life to Christ. "I would have to giveup too much," he says. "Why can't I be a Chris-tian without changing my lifestyle?"

Ask groups to incorporate answers to the fol-lowing questions: 1. Who is Jesus (His identity)that Bob should worship Him? 2.
