Sunday School Lessons on Salvation Activity

Into the Lesson

Give each student a sheet of lined paper withthe heading Survival List. Say, "You are strandedon an isolated isle. You know that you will notbe rescued for at least seven days. What do youwant included in the survival kit you have fortu-nately brought with you?"

Give the students a few minutes to list theitems that they consider to be essential. Then letthem share their lists, along with any explana-tion considered necessary. Expect such items asfood, water, and matches.

After all have shared, say, "Certain things areessential for earthly existence, but certain thingsare also essential for heavenly preparation. Intoday's study Jesus makes it clear: He himself isthe bread and water that we need!"

Into the Word

Read aloud John 6:28-33, the verses precedingtoday's text. In those verses the context fortoday's teaching about bread are given.

Then have two of your better oral readers readExodus 16:11-31 and Exodus 17:5-7. These pas-sages relate to the bread and water God providedfor the Israelites during the wilderness wander-ing. Have one volunteer read the words spokenby God, Moses, and the people; the other volun-teer will read the narrative. After looking attoday's text, you may wish to return to thesetexts for a comparison and contrast between thedesert bread and water and the bread and waterthat is Christ himself. (For example, both weresent by God for the welfare of His people; bothcame while the people were in sin—see Exodus16:1 and 1 Timothy 1:15.)

Establish "Bread" and "Water" groups of fivepeople per group. Give each group a stack of fivecards, bearing either B-R-E-A-D or W-A-T-E-R,one letter per card. Give the cards to one person

in each group with the direction to shuffle thecards and distribute one to each group member.Announce, "The goal of your group is to de-velop an acrostic for your word. bread or water. Each word or phrase of the acrostic most be re-lated to today's text (John 6:34-40; 7:37-39) or tothe nature of Jesus. Each group member is re-sponsible to create the word or phrase for the let-ter on his or her card. OK, those with the

B or the W, get started!"

Give the groups five minutes. Then ask theperson who holds the last letter of either word (Dor R) to report the group's acrostic to the wholeclass, with any explanation deemed necessary.Though you will accept the creations of eachgroup, here is a sample for each: B equals "bro-ken," as the body of Christ will be; R equals "re-quested," as in 6:34; E equals "eternal," also from6:34; A equals "all," for He is all we need; and Dequals "delightful," for tasting Jesus always is; Wequals "wonderful," because it differs from thewater we drink each day; A equals "anticipated,"because 7:39 reveals "living water" as a referenceto the Spirit to be given after Jesus' glorification;T equals "thirst-quenching," from 7:37; E equals"enough," for the bread and water that is Christhimself is totally sufficient; R equals "required"for eternal life.

Into Life

Before today's session collect empty personalwater bottles so that you have one for each stu-dent. Also have on hand some blank peel-and-stick labels (at least 2 inches by 3 inches), twoper student. After you distribute bottles and la-bels, direct students to prepare a name label re-flecting the truths of John 6:35b and/or John7:37, 38. If they need an example or two, suggest"Thirst Quencher" (from 6:35) and "Never Dry"(from 7:38). After students finish and attach theirlabels to their bottles, have several class mem-bers read the names they have chosen.

For the second label ask students to write,"What's in it?" Suggest that for the next severaldays each student should look at his or her bottleand add to the label one attribute of Jesus that"fills his or her bottle of living water." Examplesare "divine vitamins," "pure grace," or "100 per-cent daily requirements."
