Discuss the quiz. Then tell your students thatthis lesson will analyze three metaphors thatJesus used to describe a Christian's proper rela-tionship to Him and to other Christians. Into the Word Before dividing your class for the Iwo exer-cises in this portion of the lesson, use the lessoncommentary to explain the background of John15:1-17. Focus on the meaning and significanceof the terms vine, branch, and fruit. Discuss theneed to stay "connected" to Christ in order toserve effectively and keep heresy out of thechurch. Divide the class into several small groups. Halfof the groups will do the activities in Exercise#1. The other half will do the activities in Exer-cise #2. Provide blank paper and copies of eachexercise for the groups you have created. (If youuse the student books, you will still need to pro-vide blank paper.) Allow 10 minutes for theseexercises. Then ask each group to report its find-ings to the entire class. Exercise #1 Activity A: Have someone in your group readaloud John 15:1-8. Identify what you think is thetheme of this section. Activity B: Write a paraphrase of John 15:1-8."Translate," as much as possible, the key meta-phors (vine, etc.) into plain speech. Activity C: Discuss the following questionsabout the text: (1) In the church what are the re-spective roles of Jesus and the Father as vine andhusbandman? (2) What will happen to those whodo not produce fruit? (3) What constitutes fruitin Christ's kingdom? Exercise #2 Activity A: Have someone in your group readaloud John 15:9-17. Identify what you think isthe theme of this section. Activity B: Write a paraphrase of John 15:9-17.Activity C: Discuss the following questionsabout the text: (1) What are some aspects of theFather's love for His Son? (2) How does Jesus loveus the same way? (3) Haw are we to love one an-other with this same love? (4) What most we do toremain in Christ's love? (5) What kind of joycomes from having this relationship with Christ? Into Life For each hypothetical situation describedbelow, suggest scriptural ways to help these peo-ple reconnect with the Lord and His church. 1.Jennifer was a faithful Christian through herhigh-school years. When she went off to college,however, she drifted away from God. How canyou help her reactivate her faith? 2.Bob is a member of your church, but he isinactive. His business is demanding, so he likesto use his Sundays to relax at home, do yardwork, or play golf. He talks about returning tochurch but never seems to get around to it. Whatcan you do to help him?
