Home >> Sunday School >> Sunday School Lessons >> Sunday school lesson on Honor Activity Sunday school lesson on Honor Activity Into the Lesson Procure a small dart board and pair of darts.Over the board's bulls-eye, place a picture of abeloved member of your congregation (be sure toget the person's permission). Display the board. As class begins, ask a person who you know willrefuse to do so to throw darts at the board. When you sense the hesitancy and reluctance, say, "I thought it would be difficult for anyone tothrow darts at our beloved [name]. Imagine thosein Jesus' day attacking Him and His good deeds."Note that that is what happens in today's text, asthe religious leaders attack Jesus for healing onthe Sabbath. They also attack him for makinghimself equal with God, which in fact, He is (seeJohn 5,18). As an alternate beginning, ask the class to de-scribe the ideal father/son relationship, usingonly adjectives or abstract nouns. Expect suchresponses as respectful and submissive. Into the Word Prepare a copy of the following table for eachstudent. (The table is included in the studentbook.) Ask students to fill in the chart, briefly notingwhat each person at the top will do or not do ac-cording to each verse. Note that most verses willnot use all three columns. For example, for verse22: the Father does not judge; it is the Son whojudges. To continue the examination of the text, readaloud the following expressions in random order, one at a time. Ask the class to identify a relatedverse from today's text. (Do not read aloud theverse numbers provided in parentheses aftereach expression.) "Escape with a pass key" (v. 24). "Like Father, like Son" (v. 19). "Dead men's ears—what shallthey hear?" (v. 28). "Love shows" (v. 20). "Lifeand death; Father and Son" (v. 21). "Who gets tojudge? The judge!" (v. 22). "Honor one, honor theother" (v. 23). "Listen up; come alive!" (v. 25)."Full of life; full of life" (v. 26). "See good; dogood" (v. 19). "Just because" (v. 27). "Risen up,risen down" (v. 29). "Hear . . . believe . . . live!"(v. 24). As the class identifies verse numbers, dis-cuss the meaning of each. Display the phrase The Second Coming ofChrist. Ask the group to quote from the Bible somefacts about that grand event. Make a quick list. Then say, "OK, this is a good list, but do we haveeverything Jesus reveals in today's text?" Have stu-dents look especially at verses 24-29. Add any im-portant ideas to the earlier listing. (Decide in advance which of the above threeactivities you will allow the most time for, de-pending on what content you wish to stress.) Into Life Put the following fill-in expression on display:"I Res t Jesus' Authority!" (A similar activityis found in the student hook.) Ask for letter com-binations to fill in the blank (such as is, en, pet,and tric). Discuss how people's lives demonstratehow they would fill in the missing letters.Next, give each student a slip of paper withthe same phrase and have each fill in letters ap-propriate to his or her own attitude toward Jesus'authority. Then have each add an affirmation,"so I (will) ." Each should complete theidea either with a description of how his or herlife is being lived or how he or she will committo begin living
