Say that this ex-perience is a part of today's lesson. Tell classmembers to find a place to sit (have a helperready to assist with this) and to feel free to visitwith the people around them. While the students remain blindfolded, tellthem that bolls darkness and blindness bringspecial challenges and dangers. Ask, "What hasyour experience of being blindfolded been like?Tell us what has happened to you." Also ask,`Mat are some of the dangers of not being ableto see?" Have students remove their blindfolds. Makethe transition to Bible study saying, "The con-'vast between darkness and light is not onlysomething that relates to seeing. In the Bible,...arkness and light are often metaphors for sinand righteousness. The phrase 'walking in the_ight' has its roots in Scripture and is the core of-relay's study." Into the Word Before class begins hang four signs from theceiling. Each sign will have one of the followingheadings: Appreciating Jesus; Rich Fellowship;Light and Darkness: Walking Like Jesus. Begin the Bible study by reading the printedtext. Tell the class that this text will be exploredby looking at key phrases (these key phrases arealso included in the student book). Ask classmembers to divide into study groups by standingunderneath one of the signs hanging from theceiling. Give each study group one set of the fol-lowing printed instructions: Group #1: Appreciating Jesus. Your task is totook at the following phrases from our text andto explain the significance of each. Be sure to read the entire text to glean information that willbe helpful. Be prepared to share your conclu-sions with the class. The phrases are That whichwas from the beginning (1 John 1:1) and TheWord of life (1 John 1:1, 2). Group #2: Rich Fellowship. Your task is tolook at the following phrases from our text andto explain the significance of each. Be sure toread the entire text to glean information that willbe helpful. Be prepared to share your conclu-sions with the class. The phrases are Fellowshipwith us . . . with the Father . . . with his Son(1 John 1:3) and Your joy may be full (1 John 1:4).Group #3: Light and Darkness. Your task is tolook at the following phrases from our text andto explain the significance of each. Be sure toread the entire text to glean information that willbe helpful. Be prepared to share your conclu-sions with the class. The phrases are God is light,and in him is no darkness (1 John 1:5) and Walkin the light (1 John 1:7). Group #4: Walking Like Jesus. Your task is tolook at the following phrases from our text andto explain the significance of each. Be sure toread the entire text to glean information that willbe helpful. Be prepared to share your conclu-sions with the class. The phrases are Propitiationfor our sins (1 John 2:1, 2) and Ought himself alsoso to walk (1 John 2:3-6). Alternative activity. Prepare eight posters, eachfeaturing one of the eight key phrases from theabove group assignments. Affix the signs to thewall before you lead a discussion of each phrasein turn. Into Life Prepare cloth ribbons to be used as wrist-bands. Use adhesive-backed hook-and-loop dotsfor fastening the wristbands. Also have numer-ous cloth markers available. Tell the class thattoday's text reminds us of the WWJD? ("WhatWould Jesus Do?") phenomenon. Have classmembers assemble their wristbands and write onthem: "WWJD? Walk in the light!" Ask classmembers to wear their wristbands for the weekas reminders to walk faithfully and enjoy thelight that God brings to life. (If you think yourclass members will resist wearing wristbands,make bookmarks instead.)
