Zacchaeus Children's Bible Story

Luke 19:1-10

In Jericho there lived a very rich man called Zaccheus. He was the top taxcollector in that area. He made a lot ofmoney for himself and for the Romans. Because of this, the Jews didnot like Zaccheus. They called him agreedy traitor.

When Jesus was on his way toJerusalem, he traveled throughJericho. Huge crowds lined the streets.They waited to see and greet Him witha big cheer. One man in the crowd wasZaccheus. He was so short he couldnot see over the crowd. So Zaccheusclimbed a tree.

He pulled himself into the lowestbranch. Then he stepped onto a higherone. He did not care if the peoplelaughed at him up in the tree. He hadheard the stories about Jesus being afriend of tax collectors. He just had tosee Jesus, no matter what.

The people below him startedcheering. Zaccheus saw a man comedown the dusty street. "Is that Him?Ah, so that's Jesus of Nazareth!',Zaccheus said.

Zaccheus shouted with the rest ofthe crowd. Then suddenly, he stopped

shouting. When Jesus passed beneathZaccheus' tree, He looked up. Hestared at Zaccheus. The tax collectorcould not say a word.

Instead, he just stared and stared.He had never seen eyes like Jesus'before. He could not tear his own eyesaway. Jesus said to him, "Zaccheus,hurry and come down. Today I muststay at your house."

Zaccheus almost fell out of the tree.He was so surprised. He grinned."What an honor!" he thought tohimself. He scrambled down the trunkand led Jesus toward his home.

The people they passed on the waygrumbled, "Look at that Jesus. ThereHe goes again, staying with sinners."When Zaccheus had welcomed

Jesus to his house, he made a promise."Here and now I promise to give halfof whatever I earn to the poor. I'll alsogive back four times whatever I've

cheated from others in the past." Hebowed his head. Zaccheus knew whoJesus was. He was ready to change hislife for Him.

Jesus said, "Today you and yourfamily are saved. That's why the Sonof Man has come here. I am here tosave all the lost and hurting people."
