Tower of Babel Bible Story

Genesis 10:1-11:4

Noah's sons had many children whohad Many children who had manymore children. The families spread out across the land. They learned how tofarm, raise animals and build greatcities.

Because they all came from thesame family, all the people spoke thesame language. When a stranger camefrom far away, everyone could knowwhat he said.

Some of the people plotted together.

"Let's build the biggest and best cityever built so we can be famous. Thenwe won't have to wander anymore.We will finally have a home."

The people were clever. Instead ofusing stones, they made bricks. They stuck the bricks together with tar,instead of mortar. Their walls were thestrongest and highest ever. And they were very proud of themselves. Theychose not to thank God for the thingsthey used for building.

"We are so smart," they said.

Inside the city was a huge tower. Thepeople thought they were such goodbuilders, they could make that toweras high as the sky.

When God saw what the peoplewere trying to do, He knew He muststop them. Otherwise they would soonthink of themselves as gods instead ofpeople. They would be too proud,which is not healthy. So He mixed uptheir language.

The people no longer spoke onelanguage, but many. If one man said"Hello," the other man did not knowwhat he had said. It was hard to getanything done, let alone finish a greattower!

The city they never finished building was called Babel. This meant"Confused," because there the Lordconfused the language of the wholeworld.
