The Story of Peter - Jesus' Disciple

John 1:35-51

Just before John the Baptist was takenprisoner, he had told two of his men togo and follow Jesus. One man wascalled Andrew. When he and hisfriend found Jesus, they startedwalking behind Him. Jesus turned andsaid, "What do you want?"

They asked if they could go towhere He was staying that evening.They wanted to listen to Him teach.Jesus said yes.

John's followers had learned fromJohn how important it is to listen tothe truth. John had said, "One greaterthan I is coming soon. Follow Him."

As Andrew listened to Jesus, hethought to himself, "I must telleveryone I know that this is the manJohn was talking about."

Andrew went to find his brother."Simon!" he called. "Simon, we'vefound the Messiah! Come, Simon,come and we'll take you to Him."

Simon did not know what to think.When Jesus saw him, He said, "Youare Simon the son of John. You will becalled Cephas or Peter." The namesCephas and Peter both meant "Rock."This was the first time Jesus metSimon. Because of this meeting,

Simon soon came to be called SimonPeter. Later he was called Peter.

The next day Jesus went to Galilee.There he saw a man called Philip."Follow Me," He said, and Philip did Philip went to a friend calledNathanael. He said, "We've found theOne Moses and the prophets spokeabout. It's Jesus from Nazareth!"

Nathanael laughed. He said he didnot think there were any good peoplein Nazareth. But when he actually sawJesus, Jesus said, "I know you,Nathanael. You believe in God. Youtry very hard to do what He wants.Just now, I know you were sittingunder a fig tree, thinking, when Philipcalled you."

Nathanael was amazed that Jesus would know what he had been doing.Nathanael said, "I believe. You are theSon of God. You are the King ofIsrael."

Jesus smiled. "Do you believe soeasily? I tell you, you will see greaterthings than these."

After Andrew brought Peter to meetJesus, the two brothers returned home.They were fishermen and needed totake care of their boats and nets.

Peter noticed a huge crowd ofpeople coming toward him. They werebeing led by Jesus.

Jesus walked right up to Peter. Hegot into his boat and asked him to pullout a little way from the land. ThenJesus sat down in the boat. He beganteaching all the people who lined theshore.

When Jesus had finished speaking,He turned to Peter. "Go out into thedeep water and let down your nets fora catch."

Peter said, "Teacher, we workedhard all night and caught nothing. Butall right, I will do as You say."

Peter dropped his net overboard.He started to haul it in again and gotthe surprise of his life. It was full tothe bursting point! He called anotherboat to come and help him. By thetime he and the other men had hauledall the fish on board, both boats wereready to sink.

When Peter saw the great catch offish, he cried, "Oh, yes, You are theLord! But I'm not a good man at all.Please just leave me alone!"

Jesus told him and Andrew, "Don'tbe afraid. Follow Me and I will helpyou become fishers of men." ThenPeter and Andrew put down theirnets. They landed their boats, whichwere full of fish, and followed Jesus.

As they walked along the shore,they soon met Peter's partners, twobrothers named James and John. Jesuswent up to them. "Follow Me," Hesaid. They took one look at Jesus' face,felt their hearts turn over and agreed.

These men became Jesus' closestfriends. They followed Himeverywhere as He taught the people.They watched and learned from Him.They were Jesus' helpers, Hisdisciples.
