The Story of King Saul

I Samuel 9:26-10:8

After the banquet, Saul spent thenight at Samuel's house. They slept onSamuel's roof since it was so hot. Thenext morning Samuel told Saul it wastime for him to go home.

As the two men walked toward theedge of town, Samuel stopped. Heturned to Saul and poured oil over hishead. This meant Saul was a specialman in the eyes of God. "The Lordhas chosen you to lead His people andrule over them as king."

Saul bowed his head. "How can thisbe!" he wondered.

All that had happened seemed sobig and impossible. How could

Samuel know all this? The answer,very simply, was God had told him."Saul, when you leave here today,you'll meet two men who will say,`The donkeys which you've beenlooking for have been found.' Nowreturn to your father, before he startsto worry."

As Saul turned to leave Samuel, Goddid a very special thing. He changedhis heart. Now when Saul saw all thethings Samuel had predicted wouldhappen, he knew it was because Godhad made it happen.

Later that day Saul did find out

about the donkeys, exactly as Samuelhad said he would.

Soon after this Samuel called thepeople together. "Do you still want aking?"

The people yelled, "Yes, we want aking!"

"All right, God will choose a kingfor you," Samuel said. Then Samuelthrew lots, which were a type of dice.Through the lots God chose the tribeof Benjamin. One by one, Samuel wentthrough the families of Benjamin. Godshowed He wanted the Matri family.This was Saul's family.

Then Samuel went through eachman in that family until God choseSaul. He asked, "Where is this man?"

"Who is-Saul?" The people alllooked around. "Where is he?"Samuel asked the Lord. He toldthem Saul was hiding among the bagsand baskets.

The people ran and found Saul.They brought him before Samuel."See how tall he is," Samuel said."This is your king!"

The people cheered, "Long live the king!"

Samuel told the people about therules they would have to follow if theyhad a king. Then he wrote them downon a scroll.

As long as Saul followed God'srules, the Lord would bless him.

When David killed Goliath, Saulmade David a general. He sent himout to fight many battles. Every timeDavid returned from a war, he becamemore and more of a hero.

One time, when David came backfrom killing many Philistines, a groupof Israelite women gathered aroundhim and Saul. They sang, "Saul haskilled his thousands and David histens of thousands."

This made Saul very angry andjealous. He thought to himself,"David's already more popular than Iam. Soon he may even try to take mykingdom away." From that day on,Saul was jealous of David.

Saul even tried to get David killedby sending him on dangerous missions.David just became more of a hero.One time, David was off fighting thePhilistines. Saul's daughter, Michal,prayed he might return alive. Sheloved David very much. Because Godwas with David he did everythingwell. This time was no different.

When he came back with the proofof his killing, Saul grew even moreafraid of David. David had the Lordwith him, and Saul did not. Thepeople loved David. They cheeredwhenever he passed through the city.David and Michal were married. NowDavid had the love of Saul's daughterto make him even stronger.
