The Story of Jesus' Death

Matthew 27.44-50; Mark 1533-37; Luke 23:39-46:John 19:28-30

The crosses of two other men stoodnear Jesus. Both were robbers. Onerobber laughed at Jesus. "SaveYourself and us! You're supposed to bethe Christ, aren't you?"

The other robber said, "You shouldbe more afraid of God. This man hasdone nothing wrong." Then he calledout, "Jesus! Remember me when Youcome in Your kingdom!"

Jesus said, "I promise. Today youwill be with Me in paradise."

After Jesus was hanging on thecross for six hours, He cried out, "MyGod, My God, why have You left Meso alone?"

During those hours on the cross,Jesus became the go-between forpeople and God. Jesus is the Waythrough which any man, woman orchild can be touched by God.

That afternoon, the whole earth wascovered with darkness. Like a blanket,the heavy blackness covered both cityand countryside.

Jesus was also in darkness. For thefirst and only time in Jesus' life, Godlooked away from His Son. As Jesustook on the sin of the world, He feltthe pain and hurt of it all.

Jesus said nothing for a long time.He was in great pain and very slowlydying. "Father, here is My Spirit!"Jesus had suffered enough. The pricewas paid. The way back to God was open now.

Then Jesus cried out again with open now.

Then Jesus cried out again with aloud voice, "It is finished!" It was acry of a battle won. Jesus bowed Hishead and took His last breath. Jesuswas dead.

The very moment that Jesus cried out,He gave up His Spirit to heaven. Thecurtain in the temple split in half. Thiscurtain marked the way into the

holiest place of the temple. This wasthe closest anyone could get to God.Only the high priest was allowed in,and then only once a year.

A very special thing happenedwhen the curtain split in two. WhenJesus died, it meant people no longerhad to wait for the high priest to pray

for them to God. Jesus had died for allpeople. He made a Way for them toreach God. So there was no need forthe curtain anymore. Anybody couldreach out to God, thanks to Jesus.Jesus had died. The sky was dark.There was a great rumbling noise. Theearth shook. Huge stones split and fellfrom the hills. Stranger and strangerthings happened that evening whenJesus died.

"Why is it so dark?" peoplescreamed.

"It's the end of the world! We'rebeing punished!"

Men and women cried out in fear.They ran. Panic gripped the city.Many of the tombs, or places wheredead people were buried, opened up.Dead bodies became alive. Later, thesepeople would walk around Jerusalemas if they had never died.
