The King's Feast

Daniel 5:1-12

King Nebuchadnezzar lived to be oldman and then he died. The next kingof Babylon was a man namedBelshazzar. Daniel continued to workas the king's adviser. One day, whenDaniel was an old man, a strangething happened.

The king was throwing a big party.He was drunk and having a good time.Then he thought he would dosomething different, just for fun. Hewanted to see all the gold and silvercups and plates that had been takenout of God's temple in Jerusalem.

"Tonight we will drink like thegods!" he told his guests. Together theypraised the false gods of gold and

silver. Then they drank out of the holycups.

Suddenly, all at once, a strangehand came out of nowhere! It beganwriting on the wall of the king'spalace. The king turned pale. His handshook. He felt his knees knock.

"Quickly!" he called. "Bring thewizards, magicians and wise men here.I have to know what this hand haswritten. I'll give anyone who can readit a great reward!" All the wizardstried their best, but nobody could readthe writing on the wall.

"Your Majesty," the queen mothersaid. "There is a man who might helpyou. He is the head of the wise men.He helped Nebuchadnezzar interprethis dreams. This Daniel might be ableto help you now."

Daniel was brought before the king,who said, "I've heard you know whatdreams mean. Tell me what thishorrible hand has written on the wall.Then you will be greatly rewarded.You may wear the royal color purpleand I'll give you a gold necklace.""You can keep your gifts," Danielsaid. "I don't want your rewards. I'llread the meaning of these wordsbecause of what the Most High Godshows me. Do you remember thelesson King Nebuchadnezzar had tolearn? He knew that God is the Onewho decides who should be king."But you haven't learned this. You haven't shown respect for the Lord.That was what King Nebuchadnezzaronce ordered. You've grown so proudthat you took the cups and plates fromGod's temple. You gave them to yourwomen to drink wine out of. That'swhy this hand has written a messagefor you today.

"The words mean this: God willsoon end your kingdom. You havebeen judged and have failed the test.Your kingdom will be divided betweenthe Medes and Persians."

When Daniel had finished, the kingrewarded him. Then that same night,all that Daniel had said came true.Belshazzar was killed and the Persiansconquered the Babylonian empire
