The Greatest Love Story in the Bible

Luke 15:11-19

Jesus told the people a story about a man who had two sons. He said, "Oneday, the youngest son went to his father. He said, 'Father, give me themoney which would be mine whenyou die. I want it today.' The fatherdid not think it was a good idea. Hefinally agreed. A few days after he gotthe money, the younger son left home."He traveled a long way until hecame to a faraway country. There hewasted all his money getting drunkand having wild parties. When hismoney ran out, he was left withnothing at all. He could not even buyfood.

"This younger son went from houseto house. He begged for scraps.Finally he ended up working on afarm, feeding pigs. He was so hungry,he wished he could eat with the pigs.

"Before long, this son thought tohimself, 'All of my father's workershave more than enough to eat. Yethere I am, starving to death! I must gohome and say I'm sorry to my father.'So the younger son left the pigs andheaded home."

As Jesus told the story about the boywho had left home, He hoped thepeople would learn the lesson of thestory. God will forgive anybody andeverybody, as long as they are sorry.Anyone who is willing can start overfresh again.

Jesus told the rest of the story. "Theyoung man did not know that hisfather had been watching for himevery day since he ran away fromhome. 'Please let him come hometoday,' the father had prayed while hestared down the road.

"On this very special day, the sonwas still a long way off when his fathersaw him. He shouted, 'There he is! It'shim! My son has come home!' He randown the road and hugged his son."But the son hung his head. 'Father, I've been so bad. I don't deserve to becalled your son. I lost all my moneyand. . .

"But the father did not let himfinish. He ordered his slaves, 'Quickly,bring out the best robe and put it onhim. Put a ring on his hand and gethim some proper shoes. Kill the calfwe were saving for a feast! Let's have aparty! My son was dead, and now helives. He was lost and has been found!'

"The younger son cried for joywhen he saw how his father lovedhim. He was so relieved. Before long,there was a great feast. All of hisfather's servants and friends joined inthe party.

"The older son, though, was not sohappy when he came home fromworking in the fields. He heard musicand laughter. He asked a servant whythere was a party. When he heardwhat had happened, he became angry.His father tried to explain. But theolder son turned away.

" 'This is just not fair,' he said. Torso many years I've been the perfectson. I work hard for you. Yet younever so much as gave me a fat goat soI could have a party with my friends.But when this other son wastes yourmoney, you give him everything.'

" 'But you're also my son,' thefather said. 'Everything I have belongsto you. Don't you see? This brother ofyours was dead and now he's alive. Hewas lost and has been rescued!' "
