Bible Story of Deborah

Judges 4:1-16

Many, many years passed. The peopleof Israel forgot their promises toMoses and to God. They worshipedother gods. So the Lord allowed theirenemies King Jabin and his GeneralSisera to conquer them.

At that time the Lord had sent awoman named Deborah to be a judgeover Israel. God had blessed her withwisdom. She loved the Lord God verymuch. She often told her people tolisten to God and obey Him. But mostof them just laughed at her.

As a judge, Deborah listened to allthe problems of the people. WhenDeborah held court, she satunderneath a big palm tree. Then allthe people stood in line. They waitedto talk with her.

One day Deborah sent for Barak, anIsraelite soldier. "Barak, you are totake ten thousand men. Lead the wayto Mount Tabor. When General Siserahears you are there, he will bring hischariots and troops. We will fight agreat battle and defeat him at theriver."

"Well, all right. If you say so,Deborah. But I don't want to fight thisbattle unless you're there, too."

Deborah smiled at him. "Is yourfaith in God less than your faith inme?" she asked. "All right. Becauseyou did not trust God, though, He will

give the victory to a woman instead ofto you."

When the day of the battle came,Barak led his troops. Deborah raisedher hands and prayed on themountaintop. God caused manythings to go wrong for Sisera's troops.Before Barak knew it, he was chasingall of Sisera's soldiers into the hills.The people of Israel had won!

When General Sisera saw he had lostthe battle, he ran away. He searchedfor a place to hide. He spotted thehome of one of King Jabin's friends."Ah," he thought, "these people willhide me."

A woman came out to meet him.Her name was Jael. "Come right in,"she said. Sisera did not know it, butsecretly, Jael hated Sisera and hisarmy. Jael gave him some milk, thenshe covered him with a blanket.

General Sisera fell sound asleep.Jael tiptoed over to his side. Shecarried a tent stake and hammer in herhands. Then Jael killed General Sisera.

Meanwhile, Barak was looking forSisera. As he came to Jael's tent, Jaelwent out to meet him. She told himwhat she had done.

Barak brought Jael back to Deborah and to the army. All thepeople of Israel cheered wildly. Theycalled out, "Who killed Sisera?"Barak looked at Deborah. Thecredit for Sisera's death must go to awoman. He held Jael's hand up highso the crowd could see her. "Thiswoman! Jael killed Sisera!"

All the people of Israel cheeredJael. Deborah and Barak toldthem, though, it was the Lord God who had won the warfor t em. They even sang a song aboutGod's victory.
