Story - The Marriage of Cana

John 2:1-11

A few days later, Jesus and Hisdisciples were invited to a wedding inNathanael's hometown of Cana. Itwas a big wedding. The party lastedseveral days. Jesus' mother Mary wasthere, too.

There were many, many people atthe wedding. Food was heaped ontables. There was meat and nuts, rice,cakes and fruit.

All the guests drank a great deal ofwine. Halfway through the feast thebridegroom noticed the wine wasrunning out. "Oh no," he thought to himself. "This is terrible!"

It was the bridegroom's job to makesure there was enough wine. If thewine ran out that meant the partymight end early. That was no fun!

Mary saw the bridegroom'sproblem. She went to Jesus. "Theyhave no wine," she said.

Jesus said, "But why do you ask Meabout this now? You know it's not yettime for Me to let people know who Iam."

Mary called a servant anyway. Shetold him to do what Jesus ordered.Jesus told the servant to fill six hugejars with water.

Once the jars were full, He said,"Take out some water now. Bring it tothe head waiter." When the headwaiter had tasted the wine, he took itto the bridegroom.

"What have you done?" he askedhim. "This is the best wine I've evertasted!" The bridegroom did not knowwhere all the wine had come fromMary knew.

Jesus and His followers traveled toJerusalem. When they arrived, it wasalmost time for the Jewish Passover.They went straight to the temple. Itwas the same place where Mary andJoseph had found Jesus when they lostHim as a boy.

When Jesus arrived at His Father'shouse this time, He did not like whatHe saw. Instead of people praying toGod and studying the laws of Moses,they were using the temple as a market.

People sold sheep and cows andbirds to offer as sacrifices. The templerang with all the baaing and mooingand shouting. Jesus' disciples lookedat Him. They could tell He was upset.Suddenly, Jesus grabbed a whip. He ran through the courtyard of the temple. His disciples stood and watched with open mouths. Jesus ranback and forth. He drove the animalsand people from the area. "Get out!"He shouted. "Take these things away!How dare you turn My Father's houseinto a marketplace!"

He turned over the tables of themoneychangers. Coins splashed allover the floor. Animals ran in everydirection. People shouted.

When Jesus had finished, He took afew moments to relax. Then He startedteaching the people who had followedHim. During the next days of the Passover feast, He taught people aboutGod. He also did several miracles.Many people believed what He said.They wanted to learn more and promised they would always followJesus.
