Story of Solomon

1 Kings 3:2-5: 2 Chronicles 1:7-8

When David died, young Solomon became king. To be a king with gold and jewels may sound very fine. To be a king who knows what is best for the people, that is very, very hard. When Solomon became king, he did not feel very sure of himself.

Then one night, Solomon had adream. God appeared to Solomon. Hesaid, "Ask whatever you wish fromMe and I will give it to you."

Some people might have asked formore toys, good health, more moneyor power. Solomon did not ask forany of these things. Instead he wantedsomething far, far better.Solomon's Dream

When God asked Solomon to make a wish, Solomon answered, "Lord, Youhelped my father David while he wasking. He trusted in You. Now You

have made me king in his place. I'mso very young, Lord. I don't knowhow to be a good king like my fatherDavid was. I only ask for this onething. Give me a heart full of wisdom.Help me to see what is right andwrong. I want to rule over Yourpeople as You want. Help me to judgeYour people with wisdom. Help me toknow the difference between good andbad."

This answer pleased God verymuch. He said to Solomon, "Because you have asked for this and not to livea long life or become rich, I will makeyour wish come true. Now I havegiven you a wise heart. There willnever be a king as wise or as great asyou."

But that was not all. God added, "Ihave also given you what you havenot asked for. You have riches andhonor. If you walk in My ways, I willsee that you live a long life

One day two mothers came to KingSolomon. Each carried a baby. Thefirst woman's baby was dead. Thesecond woman's was alive. Eachwoman claimed the living baby as herown.

Solomon said, "Guard, cut theliving child in two. Then give half toone woman and half to the other."The first woman screamed, "No!Please, don't! You'll kill him. Oh, mylord, give her the baby. Then at leasthe'll stay alive."

But the second woman said, "You'reright, King Solomon. Go on, cut himin half! Then neither of us will havehim!"

The king sighed and told his guard,"Give the living baby to the firstwoman. She spoke as only the truemother could have."
