Story of Peter in the Bible
Acts 12:1-17
More and more people listened and believed Jesus' followers. This wassometimes very dangerous. The evilKing Herod wanted to kill all theChristians.
Many of the Christians were forcedto run away. Some had to live in cavesto meet secretly. Not everyone gotaway. Herod did catch Peter. Herodthrew him into prison and orderedfour squads of soldiers to guard him."After the Passover we will put himon trial," King Herod said. But Godhad other plans.
Peter was not alone. Many peoplewere praying for him. Peter wasn'tafraid to die. He could still hear thewords Jesus had said so often to him,"Don't be afraid." He thought aboutthis during the night before his trial.Peter was chained to two soldiers.There were also guards in front of thedoor.
Suddenly, an angel of the Lordfilled the prison cell with light. Heshook Peter, "Get up quickly." Peterstood up. The chains fell right off him!"Put on your sandals and coat. Thenfollow me!" the angel said.
Peter did as he was told. He did notbelieve it was really happening. "Imust be dreaming," he thought. Oneby one, they passed the guards. Noone even looked at Peter! When theyreached the gates into the city, theyopened all by themselves! Peter stepped out onto the street. The angel disappeared.
Peter made his way to a housewhere the Christians were meetingthat night. When Peter knocked at thedoor, a servant answered. She heardPeter's voice. The servant was veryhappy it was Peter. She ran to tell theothers, but forgot to open the door!"It's Peter outside!"
The others looked up. "What? Well,maybe it was his angel."
All this time, Peter was knockingand knocking on the door. Theyfinally opened it and everyone startedtalking at once.
Peter calmed them down. Then hetold them how the Lord had let himout of prison.
