Story of Martha and Mary

Luke 10:38-42

Jesus wants to be Friend to goodpeople and bad, stranger and disciple.While Jesus walked the-mr h He hthree best friends besides His disciples.They were sisters, Martha and Mary,and their brother, Lazarus. Theyopened their home to Jesus. Theyasked Him to make it His own. AsJesus traveled, He often stayed withMartha, Mary and Lazarus. It was agood place to rest and get away fromall the crowds.

During one of His visits, Marthalearned a very important lesson. Jesuswas relaxing in the main room. Hewas talking to Mary. Her sister Marthawas very excited that Jesus wasvisiting them. She wanted everythingto be just right. She busied herselfcooking and cleaning.

"I want this to be a perfectevening," she told herself. There wasonly one problem. Martha could notpossibly do all the work by herself.

She rushed about, gathering herbs andvegetables from the garden, cleaningand cooking.

When Martha looked over from thekitchen, she noticed her sister Marydoing nothing at all. Mary sat at Jesus'feet, listening to all that He said."Why, she's not even helping a little,"Martha thought. "And there's still somuch to do!"

Just then, Jesus looked up atMartha. He rose and crossed the room."Lord," she said, "don't You care thatmy sister has left me to do all theserving alone? Please tell her to helpme."

But Jesus answered, "Martha,Martha, you are worried and botheredabout so many things. Only a fewthings are worth it. Really only one.Mary wants to hear what I teach.That's a good thing and shouldn't betaken away from her. Why don't youdo the same?"

Martha looked at Him. All of asudden, she relaxed. She felt the tightmuscles untie their knots. Her faceeven showed a smile in place of thefrowns she had worn all morning. Shenodded and followed Jesus back intothe room. There she settled onto thefloor, next to her sister. Together theylistened to the words of Jesus.

From then on, Martha made sureshe never made working for Jesusmore important than getting to knowHim better. It is a lesson all followersof Jesus should remember.

Many people wondered, "Who isJesus? Where did He come from?"They kept asking the same questionsover and over again. Jesus knew thisand gave them His answer.

"I am the Good Shepherd." ThenHe painted a word picture for them.
