The Lost Sheep and theLost Coin

Luke 15:1-10

The price of following Jesus is high.But the value of every single person inGod's eyes is even higher. Godtreasures every child, every man andevery woman. He would like nothingbetter than that each person turn toHim and start his or her life over.

The religious leaders did not likethe type of people who followed Jesus.Because of this, Jesus told two storiesabout how valuable these people are toGod. The first story was about a lostsheep.

Jesus asked, "If you had a hundredsheep and lost one of them, wouldn'tyou go after the one which was lost?And when that sheep was found,wouldn't you carry it back to theflock? Wouldn't you call your friendstogether? 'I've found my sheep whichwas lost!' you would shout.

"In the same way, there will bemore joy in heaven over one sinnerwho says, 'I'm sorry,' than overninety-nine people who think they areso good they don't need God's help."

Heaven is filled with the angels' songsof joy whenever one person comesback to God.

The second story was about awoman who had a set of ten coins. Shelost one coin, which was worth anentire day's work. Jesus asked, "If awoman loses one of these silver coins,she will search the house. She willsweep and look under the bed andcarpets until she finds it.

"And when she has found it, shewill call together her friends and say`Be happy with me! I finally found thelost coin!'

"In the same way, the angels smileand sing whenever one person says heor she believes in God and wants tolive a better life with Jesus' help."

The people were amazed at whatJesus told them. It meant even the badpeople, especially the bad people, werewelcome in heaven. If they only saidthey were sorry, God would welcomethem back and give them the strengthto start over. Jesus was showing themthe way into God's very ownkingdom. This is the way of lovingGod and loving others.
