David and Goliath Story

1 Samuel 17.31-54

During the next few years David oftenvisited the palace and played his harpfor Saul. Sometimes Saul had to leave and fight wars against the Philistines.Then David would go home to hisfather.

Among Saul's soldiers were three ofDavid's elder brothers. Jesse often toldDavid to bring grain and bread andcheese to his brothers. That way hecould hear how his sons were doing.During one battle, Saul and hissoldiers had a big problem. No fightinghad started yet because of a Philistinesoldier named Goliath. Goliath was avery, very, very tall man. To most ofthe Israelites, he looked just like agiant. Goliath the giant had challengedthe Israelites.

"If any of you want to fight me,then I dare you to try. If I win, youwill all become our slaves. If yourman wins, then we have to serve you."All Saul's men took one look atGoliath and shivered in fear. "Howcan we fight a giant like that?" theywhispered. No one dared to fight him.

Even David's brothers were too afraidto fight Goliath.Goliath's Insults

For over a month Goliath threatened the Israelite army. At this time, Jessehappened to ask David if he wouldbring supplies to his brothers. Davidwas glad to go.

When David reached the camp, helooked everywhere for his brothers.Just then, a great cry went up from theIsraelite soldiers.

"Run for your lives! It's the giant!"Goliath bellowed, "Ha! I knew it,you Israelites are all just an army ofcowards. I dare Israel to prove mewrong. Your God is weak! He can'thelp you!"

Goliath had said a terrible, terriblething. He had said God was weak.When David heard Goliath's insults,he grew very angry. He tried to findout more from the frightened soldiersaround him. He heard about thereward. Saul had offered riches and hisdaughter in marriage to any man whowould fight Goliath.

David went to Saul. He told him, "Letme fight this Goliath. I don't wantGod's people to look like cowards."

Saul said, "You can't fight him.You're just a boy."

David stuck his chin out. "I'vesaved my sheep from lions and bears."Finally Saul agreed. He gave Davidhis armor and weapons. They weretoo big. Since David was not used towearing such heavy armor, he threw itoff. "I will meet Goliath dressed as ashepherd."

Then David chose five smoothstones from a nearby brook. It wastime to fight the giant.

When Goliath saw him, he roared,"What an insult! You dare to send a little boy to fight the great Goliath?"But David told him, "You mighthave a sword and spear. My weapon isthe name of the Lord God Almighty.He is the God of our army, the very one you made fun of.

"Today God will help me strike youdown and take off your head! Then thewhole world will know it's not a sword which wins battles, but the power of the Lord!"

Goliath moved closer to attackDavid. Suddenly, David darted toward Goliath. He fit his sling with a stone. David swung it around andaround his head, then let it fly.

It whirred through the air fasterthan it took Goliath to raise his spear.Too late, the stone bored a hole rightinto Goliath's head! The great giantfell with a mighty thud, onto theground.

David took Goliath's big, heavysword. He killed him and cut his headoff. The Philistines could not believetheir eyes. They turned and ran. Themen of Israel and Judah did not letthem get away. A great battle was wonthat day, because David trusted in God's power.
