Children Church Stories about Paul in the Bible

Acts 20:17-38

Paul was on his way back toJerusalem. He tried to teach in asmany places as possible. Many yearshad gone by since Paul first wasblinded on the road to Damascus.Now he visited old friends and madenew friends. He wrote many letters tothose friends he could not visit inperson.

Paul wanted to reach Jerusalem asquickly as possible. He knew he wouldnot see his friends again. They warnedhim that Jerusalem would be

dangerous. He said, "You know I mustgo onto Jerusalem. I must finish thework God has given me to do. Becareful while I'm gone. Watch out forpeople who would like to see all ourhard work ruined. Protect the Churchhere and carry on the work God hasgiven us."

Over and over again, Paul's friendswarned him about all the people whowanted him killed. Jerusalem hadbeen the most dangerous city forJesus. It would be the same for Paul.Everyone knew Paul would probablybe thrown into prison there. Even Paulknew that. It did not matter. He stillhad to go where God wanted him.

Paul wrote all this down in theletters he sent to friends. They wereglad to hear from him. Everyoneworried, though. What would happento Paul in Jerusalem?

Jerusalem did turn out to be adangerous place for Paul. Thereligious leaders led the people in ariot. They tried to kill Paul. Romansoldiers arrived just in time, though.They arrested Paul, so the crowdwould not kill him.

They did not know who he was orwhat he had done wrong. Paul asked ifhe could talk to the crowd. Thesoldiers agreed.

Paul asked the people to listen tohim. Then he told them who he reallywas. He told how Jesus had changedhim from an enemy of the Christiansinto one of their leaders. He talkedabout how he had met Jesus on hisway to Damascus. Then God had senthim out to preach to the non-Jews, aswell as the Jews.

When the crowd heard this, theystopped listening and started yelling."Away with him! Kill this man!" Thecommander brought Paul inside thefort. He was about to beat him so hecould find out what he had donewrong.

"Wait a minute!" Paul warned him."Are you allowed to beat a Romancitizen without a fair trial?" Thesoldiers could get into a lot of troubleif they hurt Paul without a goodreason. So the commander talked tothe religious leaders in the crowd. Thecaptain would bring Paul to them thenext day to be tried.

At his trial Paul tried to explainagain. Nobody listened, though.Everyone started shouting at everyoneelse. The troops kept Paul from beingtorn to pieces. That night, Paul wasback in prison. The Lord stood next tohim. "Be brave, Paul. You're doingthe right thing. Just as you told peopleabout Me here in Jerusalem, so youmust tell them in Rome."
