The Treasure Hunt

Matthew 6:19-34; Luke 12:22-32

During the Sermon on the Mount Jesus taught His followers how to search, for hidden treasure. "Where your'treasure is, that is where your heart will be," He said. What did He mean?Whatever a person thinks aboutand dreams about, that is what he orshe is most in love with. Do youdream about having more toys, savingmore money, running faster? Is theresomething you want more thananything else in the world?

Jesus taught that treasures like thesecan all disappear. The place to lookfor hidden treasure is in heaven. "Youcannot love money and love God,"Jesus said.

"Don't worry about having enoughto eat or drink, or how you will buynew clothes," Jesus taught. Put Godfirst in everything and you will seehow everything works out for the best.God is bigger than any problem you might have. Just be sure to talk toHim about it.

"Look at the birds," Jesus pointedat a flock flying overhead. "Yourheavenly Father feeds them. Aren'tyou worth much more than a bird? Why worry about clothes then? God

How to Build a House

Matthew 7:24-29; Luke 6:46-49

Jesus finished His Sermon on theMount, "If you change your lives, youare like the wise man who built hishouse on solid rock."

What happens to a house built onrock? It stays put, no matter if it rainshard or the winds blow.

"Those who hear these words, butdo not try to change, will be like thefoolish man. He built his house uponthe sand," Jesus said.

What happens to a house built onsand? It might be very pretty. As soonas a storm hits, as soon as floods rage, the house is swept away. It will fallwith a big crash!

Everyone who has heard thisteaching by Jesus has a choice. Theycan walk away, living as they used to.Or they can act on what they haveheard. They can let Jesus' teachingchange their lives.

True Happiness

Matthew 5:1-12; Luke 6:20-23

Jesus gave a very important talk oneday, on a hillside. He wanted toexplain some of His teaching. Many, many people followed Him there. Thetalk Jesus gave is called the Sermon onthe Mount.

On that hillside, Jesus taught thepeople about real happiness. Thepeople noticed He turned everythingupside-down. Instead of saying thetough and pushy people would bewinners, He said the weak people andones who depended on God were trulyhappy. This was something the peoplehad never heard before.

"The most precious people in God'seyes are the poor. The special ones arethose who are hurting and gentle. They want very badly to see the rightthing done. These are the people whotake care of others.

"If anyone hurts you because youbelieve in Me, then be glad. You willsurely be rewarded in heaven," Jesussaid.

Do You Know How to BeSalt?

Matthew 5:13-16

The people who heard Jesus wereastonished. This was like no teaching

they had ever heard before. It madethem feel loved and wanted by God."You are the salt of the earth,"Jesus said.

"But how can we be salt?" theyasked each other.

The answer is that ordinary peopleare the ones who make the world aspecial place. Mothers and fathersraise their children. The peacemakerstry to bring people together. Peoplewho work hard then come home andplay with their children, all thesepeople stop the world from wastingaway. They are just like salt becausesalt helps keep meat from going bad orwasting. And salt makes food tasteextra good. Ordinary people, not therich or powerful people, can changethe "taste" of the world from bad togood.

"You are the light of the world. Youcannot hide a city on a hillside," Jesussaid. He knew the lights of a citywould always be seen a long way off.No one hides a light under a bucket. That would be a silly waste. So, too, people who follow God in their livesshould not be afraid to do the thingsJesus says. Every man, woman andchild who loves God, can show otherswhat God is like. They do this byloving the people around them.
