Elisha stood watching as the prophetElijah was taken up to heaven. It wasan amazing sight! Fiery horses ran across the sky. They pulled a chariotso bright, it could have been on fire.Elijah rode in the fiery chariot. Wind howled in Elisha's ears. He shaded hiseyes with his hands, the light was sobright. Sand blew in a whirlwindaround him. Then suddenly it was very quiet.Elisha lowered his hands and lookedup. Elijah was gone. The sky wasempty, the wind still. Elisha lookedaround him. He was alone. itHe bent down and picked up Elijah's cloak. Then he turned to facethe Jordan River. He took the cloakand struck the waters. "Where is the Lord, the God ofElijah?" he called out. As Elisha struckthe water with Elijah's cloak, waterreared up into a wall of waves. Elisha crossed over a strip of dry land. Whenhe reached the other side, the wavescame down with a crash. Elisha's wish had come true. Godhad given him the same spirit of aprophet as Elijah had had. Elisha theprophet was ready to go whereverGod called him. Elisha traveled up and down the land.Everywhere he preached to the people. He tried to make them stopworshiping false gods. He gave adviceto kings and poor people. Elisha toldeveryone he met about God's love.Because the Holy Spirit was withElisha, he worked miracles in God'sname. One such miracle helped save amother and her two boys from beingsold as slaves. This woman was thewidow of a prophet for God. Whenthe evil Queen Jezebel was still inpower, many men of God had beenkilled. This woman was the wife ofone such dead prophet. She had twolittle children to take care of, but nomoney. In those days it was very hard for awidow to make any money. Thiswoman had no one to help her."Please sir!" she cried out to Elisha."My husband is dead. You know heobeyed and trusted in God. But I oweso much money. And I have nothingto pay with. The man I owe money tosays he will come and take mychildren away if I don't pay him soon.My children and I will become slaves! Please help me!" Elisha said, "How can I help?"Then he thought for a moment. "Tellme, what do you have in your house? Is there anything you can sell to makesome money?" The woman shook her head sadly. Her hair fell in her face. She huggedher two boys. "I have nothing but ajar of oil." Elisha said, "Go, and ask yourneighbors for empty jars. Don't ask fora few. Bring every jar you can find. Then bring them back to your house.Take your sons with you and shut thedoor. Pour out the oil of your one jarinto all the jars you have collected. Then set them to one side." She did as Elisha told her. She wentaround to all her neighbors. Shecollected as many jars as she could. Then she closed the door and startedpouring oil. She poured and poured and pouredand poured. First one jar was full, thenanother and another and another. Thelittle jar of oil from which she pouredseemed bottomless. How could it contain so much oil? Finally, she saidto her son, "Bring me another jar."But he answered, "That was the lastone." The woman looked at the many, many jars of oil filling her house. Sheshook her head in wonder. She wentto tell Elisha what had happened. Hesaid, "Go, sell the oil and pay yourdebt. Then you and your sons can liveoff the rest of the money."
