Biblical Story of Daniel in the Lion's Den

Daniel 6:1-28

After Belshazzar was killed, Darius theMede became king. Darius put threemen in charge of his kingdom. One ofthese three men was Daniel.

Daniel had become a very old man.He had served God with all his heartand mind and strength. He was a manof prayer. Daniel had seen God domighty things. And the Lord hadblessed Daniel with wisdom.

Soon Darius noticed that Danielwas better than the other two advisers.The king wanted to put Daniel incharge of the entire kingdom.

This did not make the otheradvisers very happy. They plottedagainst Daniel. They tried to findsomething Daniel had done wrong.They wanted to prove he was a liar ora cheat. This was hard to do sinceDaniel was a good man. Finally, theking's men came up with a way theycould trap Daniel.

Together they went to the king."Your Majesty, we think you shouldsign this order. It says you are a god.For the next thirty days, any man whoprays to other gods must be throwninto the lions' den and die." The kingliked the idea. So he signed the order.Even though Daniel knew aboutthe king's order, he continued prayingto the Lord. All his life he had prayedat least three times a day. Kneeling bya window which faced Jerusalem,

Daniel thanked God for all Hisblessings. He prayed for his people. Hehoped the time would soon comewhen the Jews could go back toJerusalem.

Daniel's enemies saw him prayingfrom the street below. Then they wentto the king. "Remember the order yougave about not worshiping any godbut you? Well, Daniel has broken thatlaw! He still prays to his God everyday."

When the king heard this, he knewhe had been tricked. All day long hetried to come up with a way of savingDaniel. There was nothing he coulddo. The order was signed and sealed.The guards brought Daniel to him.The king said, "There's nothing I cando. I hope your God will save you."Then Daniel was thrown into the greatpit with the wild lions! The hole wascovered with a huge stone. Whatwould happen to him? Was this theend'?

The next day, as soon as the sunrose, the king hurried to the lions' den.He stood over the stone which filledthe hole. His voice shook. "Daniel,servant of the living God! Has yourGod been able to rescue you from thelions?" He held his breath.

There was a voice answering! "YourMajesty, yes He has!" Daniel was safe!"My God sent His angel and shut thelions' mouths. God protected me andI'm not hurt. I haven't done anything wrong, Your Majesty!"

The king called at once for theguards to open the den. When theylifted Daniel out, there was not even ascratch on him. The king sent for themen who had tricked and trappedDaniel. He told his guards to throwthese men into the lions' den. The eviladvisers did not even reach the bottomof the pit before the lions finishedthem off.

The king ordered, "Everywhere inmy kingdom people are to respect theGod of Daniel. He is the living God.His kingdom will last forever. He doessigns and wonders. He saved Danielfrom the power of the lions!"
