Bible Story of the Last Supper

Matthew 26:20-29; Mark 14•17-25; Luke 22:14-23;John 13:18-27

At the Passover meal Jesus told Hisdisciples, "I'm going to be betrayed byone of you!"

The disciples gasped. Who wouldturn the Teacher over to His enemies? They looked at each other andwondered, "Is he the one?"

Jesus said, "I'm going to dip thispiece of bread. Whoever dips his breadwith Mine is the one." Then Jesusdipped the bread. Judas, the son ofSimon Iscariot, joined Him. God'senemy went into Judas then. Jesussaid, "Go and do what you must."Judas got up and left the room. Theother disciples thought he might begoing out to buy more food. Judasknew he was going to Jesus' enemies.Jesus took a loaf of bread and tore itinto pieces. He handed the chunksaround the table. He thanked God forit and said, "Eat it. This is My body.Remember Me when you do this."Then Jesus took the cup of wine. Helifted it up high. He thanked Godagain. Then He said, "This is Myblood to take away sin. Drink fromthis, all of you. I will always be withyou. I won't drink this again until Idrink it with you in My Father's kingdom."

Jesus had changed the Passover feast into "The Lord's Supper." This wasJesus' last meal on earth. The LastSupper would become a very specialway for Jesus' followers to rememberHim.

He and His disciples had finishedthe meal. They stood and sang a veryold song of praise to God. Then it wastime for them to leave the house. Jesusheaded for the Mount of Olives. Thiswas a quiet place with old trees. It wasa place to rest and think, a place topray. It was a place to wait.

Jesus and His disciples climbed thehill to the garden which was calledGethsemane. As they walked, Jesussaid, "Tonight, you will all run away.No matter what happens, rememberthat I'll meet you in Galileeafterwards."

Peter said, "No! Maybe the otherswill desert You, but I won't!"

"Peter," Jesus said, "before tonightis over, that is exactly what you willdo. Before the cock crows three timesat dawn, you will have sworn threetimes that you don't even know Me.""Oh no! I'd sooner die than dothat!" Peter cried out.

The other disciples said the same."We'll never run away!"

The disciples were very upset. Theyfollowed Jesus and tried to make senseof what Jesus had been telling them."All evening long He's talked aboutHis being betrayed and dying. Whatdoes it all mean?"

"Did you see how upset the Teacherwas while we ate? Do you really thinkHe's going to die soon?"

"I don't know," another answered."I don't see how. Look how quieteverything is. Everyone is home."

"What if He does go away? Whatwill we do then?"

Jesus knew they were confused andafraid. He said, "Listen, you must stopworrying like this. You've beentrusting God, now trust Me. When Idie, I am going back to My Father. There is a place for everyone inheaven. I will prepare a place for you.I will come back and take you homewith Me. Then we will always betogether."

One of the disciples, Thomas, said,"But Lord, we don't know where

You're going. Hof will we ever getthere?"

Jesus said, "I am the way, and thetruth, and the life. The only way toreach the Father, is through believingin Me." Jesus doesn't just show us theway to God, He is the Way to God!

On the way to the garden, Jesusstopped. He wanted to pray with Hisdisciples one last time.

He said, "Father, the time hascome. You gave Me these men. Theylistened and believed that You sentMe. For their sakes, keep them safeafter I leave. While I was with them, Iguarded them. Now I go to You sothey can have more joy than they everdreamed possible.

"The world may hate them, but Youand I love them. Let them be one, asWe are. As they go into the worldnow, be with them, as You were withMe. Let the love You gave Me, nowlive inside them."

Jesus was asking the Father toprotect all His followers for all time.He was praying for people like youand me. When He had finished, He ledthem into the garden.

There, He took Peter, James andJohn. They went off alone together.Jesus was very upset. He said, "Mysoul is torn up inside, to the point ofdeath. Stay here and keep watch." Hewas going to talk with His Father. Then He said, "Pray that you won't beweak tonight." Jesus went off byHimself to pray.

A short distance away from thedisciples, He fell onto the ground. "Oh,

Father!" Jesus cried out. "If it'spossible, don't let Me go through thispain. My Father, isn't there any otherway, must I go through this?" Jesusknew God wasn't making Him doanything. Jesus had chosen to obey. That way God could work miracles. He could offer all people for all times achance to start over and be clean withGod.

Jesus looked up at the stars. Hesaid, "Father, I'm willing to do whatYou want."

Then an angel from heaven came toJesus. The angel made Him stronger.Jesus prayed and prayed. The sweatpouring down His face was like dropsof blood. Each one left a mark in thedust as it fell onto the ground.

Finally He stood up and went backto His disciples. They had fallenasleep! They were so sad and

confused. They just curled up andwent to sleep. "Peter, are you asleep?Couldn't you even keep watch for onehour? Stay awake with Me and praythat you won't be tempted tonight."This happened two more times.Jesus went off to pour His heart out toGod. He came back, only to find thedisciples fast asleep. It was a lonelytime for Jesus. When He came backthe third time, He said, "Are you stillsleeping? All right. The time hasfinally come. Look! Get up! Let's go.Look! There he is, the one who betraysMe!"
