Peter had followed behind the crowdwho took Jesus. He was too scared to help. When he saw Jesus being taken into the high priest's house, he waited.The courtyard was full of soldiers.Some of the men had built a fire tokeep themselves warm.
As Peter sat down by the fire, aservant girl came up to him. Shestared at him. " You're one of theprisoner's friends."
Peter hoped no one had heard her."No! No!" he said loudly. "I don'tknow what you're talking about."
Then he went out to the gateway.There another girl saw him. She said,"This man was with Jesus ofNazareth."
"No! No, you must be thinking ofsomeone else. I don't even know theman!" After a little while, a group ofmen came up to Peter. One of themknew the man whose ear Peter hadsliced off. "You're one of His
followers, I saw you with Him in theolive garden just a few hours ago.""Yes, he's from Galilee, all right.His accent gives him away," anotherman said.
Peter's heart beat faster and faster.He swore and shouted loudly, "I don'teven know the man!"
No sooner were the words out ofPeter's mouth, when he heard arooster crow. Jesus turned and looked
straight at Peter. Then Peterremembered what Jesus had said tohim, "Before the cock crows, you willsay you don't even know Me threetimes." Peter cried and cried overwhat he had done.
