Bible Story of Joseph

Mathew 1:20-24

One night soon afterwards, an angel ofthe Lord appeared to Joseph. "Son of David, do not be afraid to make Mary your wife. She speaks the truth. Herchild will save His people from theirsins. You should call Him Jesus."When Joseph woke up, he chose tobelieve the message.

In the meantime Mary had beenpraying for Joseph. After Joseph hadhis dream he came to her. He saideverything was all right. Her prayerswere answered! A short time later, heand Mary were married.

It was very early in the morning.Joseph had packed the donkey. Maryclimbed in between the bundlesJoseph had strapped there. Togetherthey set off for Bethlehem in Judea.

The Roman Emperor CaesarAugustus had told everyone to goback to the towns where their familiescame from. He wanted his soldiers tocount the number of people in thetribes of Israel. Joseph's family camefrom Bethlehem, so that was where hehad to go.

"I wish it were not today," Josephsaid. "The baby is so near to being born."

Mary nodded. She was trying tostay on the donkey. It was not easy.The baby inside her was so large, sheoften lost her balance. "This will be along day," she thought to herself.The hours passed. When the sunrose, it became hot. Mary wanted tofall asleep. She knew she would fall offif she did. She walked for a littlewhile. Soon she became so tired thatJoseph put her back on the donkey.Finally they arrived in Bethlehem.The streets were crowded. Childrenwere running everywhere. There wasso much noise! Suddenly, Mary felt atightening in her stomach "Joseph, the baby. I think the babyis coming."

Joseph turned white. "We have toget you somewhere quiet, out of all these crowds," he said.

The couple went from house tohouse. They asked if anyone had a spare room. Nobody said yes.

At one point, Joseph cried, "Isn'tthere anywhere we can spend the night?"

"Well," one innkeeper said. "Youcould go behind the town. There, nearthe pastures, is a hillside. I keep myanimals inside a deep cave there. Takeher to the cave. Lay some fresh haydown. No one will bother you there. At least it's quiet."

Joseph shouted his thanks over his shoulder. He ran back to Mary. Sheleaned on him as the two made theirway out of town.

Once Mary was safe in the cave,Joseph relaxed. He had been prayingso hard that all would go well. He feltbad that his wife would have her babyin a cave where animals lived. Maryand Joseph had no other choice,though.

When the baby was born, Josephheld the tiny baby boy in his arms.Mary said, "This is Jesus."
