Bible Story of an Angel Frees the Apostles

Acts 5:12-20

Each day the apostles met at one ofthe temple gates. They talked to thecrowds about Jesus. Many believed them and became followers of Christ.Others were scared of getting intotrouble. They did not get too close, butlistened anyway.

The religious leaders grew angrierand angrier about all of this. Theywere very jealous. They did not wantto ever hear about Jesus again. Yetmore people were believing in Himthan ever! How was it possible?

Finally, they ordered the guards tothrow the apostles into prison. Duringthe night God sent an angel of theLord to them. He opened the prisondoor and said, "Go your way. You arefree. Go back and tell all the people atthe temple about the new life inJesus."

The apostles went back to the temple,just as the angel had told them. In themorning the chief priests heard theapostles had escaped. Now they wereeven more worried than ever.

"Those men you're looking for aretalking to people at the temple,"

someone told them. So the captain ofthe guard brought the apostles back tothe priests. There they werequestioned.

"We told you not to teach about Je-sus anymore!"

Peter and the apostles said, "Wemust obey God rather than men. Jesuslives again. Through Him we can nowbe forgiven if we turn to God. Weknow this because we have seen ithappen. Besides, you are the ones whohung Him on a cross."

Some of the religious leadersbecame so angry when they heard this.They wanted to kill the apostles rightthere. A certain wise Pharisee toldthem, "You would be better off lettingthese men go. If they are makingthings up, the people who follow themwill stop believing. If this is from God,it will last and be real no matter whatyou do. Be careful, or you might evenfind yourselves fighting God."

The religious leaders could do nomore than have the apostles whipped.They were finally allowed to go. Theapostles walked home. They werehappy because they had been thoughtworthy to suffer for Jesus. The verynext day they kept right on teachingabout Jesus.
