Bible Story - Holy Spirit
John 15:26; 16:7; Acts 2:1
When Jesus had visited His disciples,He said, "Someday I will send you theHelper. He is the Spirit of truth whocomes from the Father. He will helpyou to believe in My plan for yourlives."
Later He added, "It's really muchbetter for you that I go away. If Idon't, the Helper won't come to you. Ipromise I will send Him to you."The "going away" Jesus had beentalking about was His going home tothe Father. Now Jesus had done that.The disciples were waiting for theHelper, or Holy Spirit. Jesus hadpromised He would come.
The disciples were afraid of beingarrested. They knew the religiousleaders could still cause a great deal oftrouble for them. They had found away to crucify Jesus. They might finda way to hurt His followers, too.
So the disciples waited. They waitedfor ten days. They waited andwondered what would happen. Whatwould this Helper do? Who was Hereally?
One day, as the disciples were hiding,they heard a noise like a great wind.The noise did not come from outsidethe room, but inside! It filled the whole house. Suddenly, small flamesappeared in the air. The flames hovered over each one of them.
They were being filled with theHoly Spirit! Their time of waiting wasover. They opened their mouths andstarted speaking languages they hadnever studied or spoken before. Thiswas a special gift from the Holy Spirit.Now people could hear about Jesus,no matter where they came from.At that time Jerusalem was filledwith people from many differentcountries. There were people fromAfrica and all over Europe. Theyspoke many different languages. Whenthe disciples went outside, the otherpeople heard them. The crowd wasamazed. "What was that strange sound we heard?"
"You heard it too? It sounded like amighty wind."
"Hey, listen to those men talking!"someone else in the crowd called."How is it possible? These men allcome from Galilee, but they speak likewe do."
The Holy Spirit had stripped all fearfrom the followers of Jesus. They nolonger huddled together in an atticroom, too scared to open the door.Instead, they poured onto the streets.They laughed and talked all at thesame time. They made no secret oftheir faith in Jesus. They told everyonethey met all about Him.
