Baker and Cupbearer Bible Story

Genesis 40:1-23

Joseph stayed in the prison cell formany days. Then one morning twoprisoners came to Joseph. They had aproblem. "We had terrible dreams lastnight. Can you tell us what theymean?"

Joseph said, "I can't help you, butmy God can."

The first man had been Pharaoh'scup bearer. He said, "In my dream Isaw a vine. On the vine were threebranches. As soon as the branches hadlittle flowers on them, the blossomsbecame grapes. Pharaoh's cup was inmy hand. I took the grapes, squeezedthem into Pharaoh's cup and gave it tohim."

Joseph said a quiet prayer, asking God for help. Then he knew the answer. "This is what your dreammeans. The three branches are threedays. In three days Pharaoh will sayyou are free. But, please," Josephadded, "could you mention me toPharaoh and get me out of thisprison?"

The second man had beenPharaoh's chief baker. He said, "Inmy dream there were three baskets ofpastries on my head. In the top basketwere pastries for Pharaoh. Then birdslanded on me. They ate the pastrieswhich were meant for Pharaoh."

Joseph took a deep breath. Godhad shown him what the dream meant. It was not nice. "The threebaskets mean three days. In three days'time Pharaoh will cut off your head and the birds will eat your deadbody."

Three days later, it happenedexactly as Joseph had predicted.

Two long years went by. All that time Joseph heard nothing from Pharaoh's cup bearer. He kept busy taking careof the other prisoners. He shared his food with them and scrubbed the cells.Day in and day out he saw the sunshine stream through the barredwindows. He prayed that God might help him become free someday.

One morning in the palace, Pharaohwoke up yelling, "I've had such a bad dream! But it was so real, I'm sure itmeans something very important."Pharaoh looked at his servants."Don't just stand there, find someone who knows what dreams mean!" heroared at them. The servants hoppedaway in fright.

All the wizards, magicians and wisemen came. They listened as Pharaohtold them about his dreams. Theylooked at charts, drew pictures ontheir scrolls, then shook their heads.No, they did not know what thedreams could mean.

The royal cup bearer stood next toPharaoh. He made sure Pharaoh's cupstayed full of wine. It was not an easything to do when Pharaoh was soangry.

Suddenly, the cup bearerremembered a promise he had made.He felt terrible that he had forgottenJoseph for so long.

"Pharaoh," the cup bearer said."When I was in prison, I made apromise to a Hebrew slave. He toldme what my dream meant. I wassupposed to tell you about him.
