Pet Care

One of the most important points to appreciate when training a dog is that, like their ancestors, today's
domestic dogs retain strong pack instincts. Consequently they look for leadership, and have a strict social order. As the trainer you must provide instructions, and the dog will accept this and adopt a subordinate role. Problems with the naturally dominant breeds, such as the Dobermann, are most likely to arise because they try to challenge your dominant position. Dogs are very responsive animals, and the tone of the voice is one of the most powerful tools in the trainer's repertoire. An encouraging voice should always be used, except when you are displeased. Most puppies have a rather limited attention span, such is their enthusiasm for life. Training should therefore be carried out in short bursts, so as to keep the puppy interested. Choose a quiet time for training, avoiding periods when you have visitors, for example, or children are playing in the vicinity, as these will be distracting.
