Planting Aloe Seeds

A large group of succulent herbs with racemes of red oryellow flowers and spiny, toothed leaves, growneither as ornamental pot plants indoors in theNorth or in the garden in the South, particu-larly for their interesting fleshy leaves. Mostlynative to Africa. Many species are availablefrom specialists. Plants are usually grown intubs or pots for years at a time. Propagated bysuckers, seeds and sometimes by cuttings ofyoung shoots.

aristata 6" Zone 9

Bristly, neat rosettes of foliage, the leaves 4 in.long and in. wide, covered with white wartsand having white marginal teeth. The flowers arereddish yellow, if in. long, but flower shootsmay be II ft. tall.

brevifolia x' Zone 9

A glaucous, robust, rosette-leaved succulentwith triangular-oblong leaves, flat on top,

rounded beneath, grayish green and with whiteteeth on the leaf margins. This suckers freely,the reason it has been used in southern Calif. asa ground cover. The flowers are red in denseracemes.

ciliaris 3' Zone 9 Climbing Aloe

A stiff, lance-leaved succulent from SouthAfrica with tall flower spikes at the end of whichare attached orange-red, tubular flowers, eachabout 1 in. long, in the late spring. The stem is ascrambling affair with the thick, triangularleaves arranged spirally. They arc about 5 in.long and have regularly spaced small spinesalong the leaf margin and the leaves are coloredwhite near the base.

humilis 6" Zone 9 Hedgehog Aloe

A shapely succulent with rosettes of glaucous,blue-green narrow leaves forming on varioussuckers, the leaves with tubercles on the backand having white marginal teeth; flowers t1 in.long, red tipped with green, borne in longracemes ft. long. This does best in the shadeand is used as a succulent ground cover insouthern Calif.

nobilis Zone 9 Gold-tooth Aloe

The leaves of this succulent perennial are nearly12 in. long and 3 in. wide. The leaf margins arehorny with triangular prickles. The flowers arered, green tipped and 11 in. long. Sometimesused for mass plantings in southern Calif.variegata 9" Zone 9 Kanniedood AloeThe most commonly available of this largegenus of plants, popularly used as a house plantin the North and in the garden in the South,valued for its white-spotted bands on the stiff,spiny-toothed, fleshy leaves. The red flowers, ifin. long, are produced on spikes about a foothigh. Native to South Africa. Propagated bysuckers, seeds and sometimes by cuttings.vera 3' Zone in Barbados AloeA herb with thick, fleshy, straplike leavesoriginating in a fanlike group from the base ofthe plant, with soft spines on the leaf margines.When the leaves are cut, a gelatinous substanceexudes which has been used on cuts and burns.This, then, is a pot plant for the kitchen whereits properties to aid in alleviating burns cancome into good use. Easily propagated byoffshoots. The yellow or red bell-like flowers areborne on a leafless stalk, but it blooms littleindoors. Probably native to the MediterraneanRegion.
