Asthma
Also called reactive airway disease, this may be an occasional annoyance or a disrupt,frightening, and at times life-threatening illness. In childhood as many as 10 percent of girls and 15 percent boys will be affected by this problems. Asthma is the most common cause for children's to enter to hospitals in the United States. Of those affected, some will have had their first episode by the first birthday, and nearly 90 percent experience it by the age wfive.
While the majority of children with asthma have occasional episodes that can be treated relatively, some develop severe and persistent symptoms that a'be very stressful for everyone in the family. Usualh-more seriously afflicted children have a family historrciasthma and allergic disease and show signs of trotitik.during their first year of life. At least half of all asthma Firen become symptom-free eventually, at least in . because their airways enlarge as they grow. Fortunately, despite more sophisticated treatments available, deaths from asthma have risen over the few years. Treating this disease diligently should be a high priority in any family in which one or more chit- are affected. Asthma is characterized by a tendency of the muscles unding both large and small airways to undergo contractions, resulting in coughing, wheezing or both. The events that trigger wheezing vary from person to person but can include illness (especially bronchitis, and sinusitis), exercise, emotional flare up as well as exposure to smoke, dust, pollen, mold, air ution, animal danders, cockroach infestation, or certain foods. Some girls may wheeze during the .-s prior to their menstrual periods. Wheezing may be provoked by certain medications such as aspirin. important characteristic of asthma is that this spasm constriction is reversible; with medication or time, the uy will return to normal.
Another important component of asthma is inflamion. Even when not in spasm, the inner lining of an matic child's airways may be chronically inflamed With swelling, increased mucus production, and large ambers of inflammatory cells.
