It is surprisingly difficult to think beyond the actual birth to parenthood. It is as if you need to know what the baby looks like before you can fit him into your dreams. You take out the layette and try to imagine how your baby will look in the clothes you have bought, but the reality of parenthood is elusive. It is hard to believe that the physical aspects of giving birth or nursing a child will ever seem insignificant. But they will. Because most couples prepare for birth rather than parenthood, getting the birth 'right' seems important. But really it is not. The older and more organized you
are, the more likely you are to want it to go to plan. It is easy to lose sight of the fact that birth is just day one of parenthood. There are thousands more days to follow. The most important aspect of giving birth is to deliver a healthy child as safely and as easily as possible. Plans should be flexible.
