How to Decorate Glass Ornaments

Etching and painting glass are thetwo most straightforward ways ofembellishing glass. Once armed withthese techniques you can create themost striking of finishes ranging fromfantastically colourful glass vases tohandsome panes of glass to install ininterior and exterior doors. However,before embarking on these decorativeventures, you will need some specificmaterials and equipment. The results,however, make this effort worthwhile.

Materials

Contour paste: creates raised lines onglass, giving the look of leadedwindows. Acts as a barrier for paints.Cotton rags: needed for drying glass.

Etching paste: an acid paste that eatsinto glass to leave a matt 'frosted'finish. Use for decorating clear andpale coloured glass.

Eye goggles: vital for eye protection.Fid: used for pressing down self-adhesive lead.

The pretty stained-glass effect on thisvase is created with glass paints and the stick-onlead is added afterwards.

The etched-glass panels add a light touchto what is otherwise quite a plain door.

Glass paints: translucent and give avibrant colours. Be aware that thesepaints are not washable.

Masking tape: ideal for makingstraight lines for etching and painting.Paintbrushes: a selection of sizes areessential for applying different paintsand etching paste.

Rubber gloves: vital to protect yourhands from etching paste.

Ruler: essential for measuring.

Scissors: small and large ones are usefulfor many cutting tasks.

Self-adhesive lead: this is easy to useand looks like real lead to given anauthentic stained glass window effectwhen combined with coloured glass orglass paints.

Self-adhesive vinyl: useful for masking-off large areas when painting andetching glass.

Sponges: natural or foam, cut intopieces, these are ideal for applyingPaint over a large area of glass.

White spirit (paint thinner): used as asolvent to clean oft most paints.

Etching Glass

1. Self-adhesive vinyl makes a good maskwhen etching. Cut out shapes from self-adhesive vinyl. Decide where you want toposition them on the glass, remove thebacking paper and stick down.

2. Wearing rubber gloves, paint theetching paste evenly over the vase with apaintbrush. Make sure you do not spreadit too thinly or you will find the effectquite faint. Leave to dry for 3 minutes.

3. Still wearing the rubber gloves, washthe paste off under a running tap. Thenwipe off any residue and rinse. Peel off theshapes, wash again. Dry the glass with aclean cotton rag.

PAINTING GLASS

1 Glass paints should be used with white spirit (paint thinner). Use masking tapefor large areas to define the edges. Pour asmall drop of paint on to a tile or saucer,take a small piece of sponge and dab itinto the paint and then on to the glass.

2 Take a small paintbrush and paintfreestyle on to the glass. Clean your brushimmediately you have finished with onecolour so that it does not go har
