How Do I Pick a Good Vacuum Cleaner?

The vacuum cleaner that you use ispurely a matter of personal choice, butthere are 5 stain types from which toselect, as described below. If you arebuying a new cleaner, the layout of your home, the number of stairs, accessibility and so on, will probablydetermine your choice.

Cylinder

This type of vacuum cleaner is usefulfor cleaning curtains, drapes, rugs andfloor coverings. Look for a compact butpowerful suction raring (usually around1000 watts). The flexible hose is usefulfor vacuuming stairs and narrow,awkward-to-reach areas such as underbeds and pieces of furniture. The onlydisadvantage is that a cylinder cleanerhas a tendency to tip over on unevensurfaces, or to knock into furniturewhen dragged behind you.

Upright

Look fbr heater bars that are goodon fitted carpets and for removingembedded dirt and per hairs. Anupright cleaner is difficult to use onstairs and, unless it is used with attachments, may not lie flat enoughto reach under furniture.

Wet-and-dry

This tends to be heavier and bulkierthan a cylinder model, as it is designed to roll along - even when filled withwater. It will also require inure storagespace. Most models vacuum, shampooand suck up water. The hoses tend to hewider than average, which means thatthey can cope with bulky debris.

Cordless

This is best used for lightweightcleaning jobs, as its suction is not verystrong. It can reach awkward areas andis useful for areas in which there arc nosockets (receptacles), but it will onlywork for up to 15 minutes Built-in central system

With this cleaning system, outlets ineach room enable a light hose to beattached. When switched on, the dirt iscarried to the outlet and then carriedthrough hidden suction pipes to acentral bin. The system is quiet to useand easy to operate but is also expensiveto install, so it is not recommended ifyou move house regularly

If you drop a fine screw or even acontact lens, locate it with a vacuumnozzle covered with a piece cut fromstockings (pantyhose) secured with anelastic band. Anything that thevacuum sucks up will he held againstthe stocking until you remove it.

Use the flat, rectangular floor andcarpet nozzle of a vacuum cleaner forcleaning carpets and hard floors.

The narrow, angled crevice nozzlealso works well on stairs, curtains anddrapes, and will remove dust fromaround the buttoning on mattressesand along skirtings (baseboards). Use itto clean refrigerator grilles.

The store powerful 'wet-and-dry'cleaners can unblock it drain by stickingup the blockage. You can also use themto suck out leaves from drain covers.
