Flower Arrangement Centerpiece

A design that is destined to be seenfrom all angles, as it would be in thecentre of a dining table or occasional table, for example, must be an all-round attraction. It should also look asgood when seen from - dome shapes, low pyramids and both regular and irregular all-round shapes, as here, are all effective. Turn the arrangement round one-quarter of a circle as you compose it, and give it a final check tomake sure that it looks well-balancedfrom all viewpoints.

In order to create a lush andluxurious look for this semi-formal centrepiece, a colour scheme in the rich, warm colours of velvet has beenused; choose the flowers for yourarrangement from a selection such asanemones, roses, Euphorbia fulgens andflowering shrub, and foliage such aseucalyptus. Here, a wide-necked,bulbous pot was painted to give a feeling of nineteenth-century opulence, but a brass, copper or pewter pot, or anycontainer in black, dark red, deep blue, purple or forest green would be equallysuitable. A surface of polished wood makes the perfect complement to thisjewel-bright arrangement.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Gather togetherthe flowers andfoliage, pot and allthe materials thatyou will need: apiece of plastic-covered florist'swire-mesh netting, narrow florist'sadhesive tape, scissors andflorist's scissors.

2. Crumple the wire-mesh netting into aneat ball and press it into the top of thecontainer. Secure it in place by threading 2 strips of florist's adhesive tape through thewire, criss-crossing them in the centre andsticking them to the top of the pot, where the endswill he concealed by the overhanging plantmaterials. Arrange the foliage to make a full shape all around the pot. Turn thecontainer to check that the leaves aredistributed evenly on all sides.

3. Work on one-quarter of thearrangement at atime. Place shortstems of euphorbiato arch over the sideof the container atdifferent levels.Next, position theanemones all aroundthe centre, alternating theircolours to heightenthe interest, and thespray carnationsfairly close to thecontainer rim.Position the fullyopened roses at theheart of the design.

4. Compose the opposite side in a similarway, and fill in the gaps with short sprays ofvariegated foliage to separate the rich, deepcolours of the flowers.

5. Turn the container around and repeatthe design on the reverse, matching thefirst side in essence if not in detail. Whenyou feel that the arrangement is complete, give it a final inspection and make anyminor adjustments as necessary

FIXING FLORIST'S WIRE-MESH NETTING

Preparing a container in this way helps to anchor stems of fresh or dried flowersin a casual and informal design.

1. Gather your materials: a container with alarge aperture, plastic-covered florist's wire-mesh netting, wire-cutters, narrow florist'sadhesive tape and scissors.

2. Crumple the wire netting into a ball andplace it in the neck of the container. If youwish to position some of the stems to slantat a low angle, ease the wire so that it formsa mound extending slightly the levelof the container rim. Remember that youwill have to position the lowest of the plantmaterials so that they conceal this holdingmaterial from view.

3. Cut 2 lengths of tape slightly longer thanthe diameter of the container's opening.Thread the first strip under the wire in 2places, take it across the container, andstick it ro the rim on each side. Cross thesecond strip at right-angles to the first andfix it in the same way. Threading the tapeunder the wire will ensure that the ball ofwire does not slip down into the container
