Fixing Electric Fan

In every house stale, moist air must heremoved and replaced with fresh airfrom outside. This happens not only inan obvious way when a window isopened or an extractor fan switchedon, but all the time. For example, airpasses up chimney flues, or finds a wayour through the inevitable small gapsin the house structure.

Unless power ventilated, mostmodern houses have very little chanceof such natural ventilation becauseimproved standards of insulation anddraughtproofing have made them muchmore airtight than formerly. Of coursethis is advantageous as it reduces

2. Drill a series of closely spaced holesthrough the wall from inside, workingwithin the guide holes drilled fromoutside. Repeat on the wall outside.

3. Chop out the brickwork with a widebolster (stonecutter's chisel) and club(spoiling) hammer, again working frominside and outside the house.

4. Use ducting for a cooker (stove) hood.D' the hole with a short length of pipe,then use connectors as required to connect the hood to the outlet.

5. Wall-mounted fans usually need around hole. Cut it out, line it with a shortlength of sleeving and make good aroundit inside and outside using plaster.

6. Fit the fan into the sleeving, ready forits electrical supply to he connected. Pita cover grille ro the outside end of thefan ducting.

For ventilating rooms, what is neededis some controllable means of gettingrid of excess moist air without wastingtoo much valuable heat. In habituallysteamy rooms such as kitchens andbathrooms, an extractor fan is the bestsolution. It will extract the moist airquickly, and will also help to get rid ofunwanted smells.

In other rooms, it is worthconsidering fitting small 'trickle'ventilators at the top of window framesand putting in extra airhricks, as thesewill often supply enough ventilation toallow the moist air to disperse beforecondensation becomes a problem.

FITTING EXTRA AIRBRICKS

1. Airbricks are available the saute size asone, two or three bricks. To fit one, startby drilling a series of closely spaced holesthiough the wall.

2. Use a club (spalling) hammer and abolster (stonecutter's chisel) to cut out thebrickwork. With solid walls, drill holesright through and also work from inside.

3. Fit a cavity litter if the wall is of cavityconstruction, then carefully trowel a bedof fairly wet mortar on to the bottom ofthe opening.

4. 'Butter' mortar on to the top of theairhrick and slide it into the opening.Push Mortar into the gaps at the sides andpark it down weld

5. Use drier mortar to point neatly allaround Thu airhrick. Inside, make good thewall with plaster and cover the openingwith a ventilator grille.

6. As an alternative to a terracottaairhrick, fit atiro-part plastic type. Thesleeves interlock to lino the hole as thetwo parts are pushed together.

7 Slide the outer section into place, andpoint around it. Then slide the innersection iron place from inside the house,and fit its cover grille
