Draught Proof Door

Fitting windows and doors are a major source of heat loss, as well ascausing cold draughts. Fitting efficientdutught stripping around them willreduce the losses and cut down thedraughts, and is a simple job to carryout. Modern self-adhesive foams aremuch more efficient and longer-lastingthan older types, and arc ideal forwindows, while doors and sash windows are best draughtproofed withpin-on (rack-on) plastic or sprung metal strips or types containing acompressible rubber seal. Specialdraught excluders are available for doorthresholds (saddles), and can be fittedto the door bottom or across thethreshold. There are even excludersdesigned to fit over letter-box openings.

Remember that draughtproofing ahome will close off many 'unofficial'sources of ventilation, turning it into awell sealed box. Fuel-burningappliances such as boilers and room heaters must have an adequate sourceof fresh air to burn safely, so it is wiseto ask a fuel supplier to check thatthere is adequate ventilation in roomscontaining such appliances. Often aventilator in a window pane will solvethe problem. Efficient draughtproofingmay also increase condensation, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. This can he prevented by providingcontrolled ventilation in these roomswith an extractor fan.

DRAUGHTPROOFING DOORS

1. The simplest type of door-bottom draught excluder is a brush seal mountedin a wood or plastic strip. Cut it to lengthand screw it on to the foot of the door.

2. Altetnatively, lit a threshold (saddle)strip. Cut the metal bar to length andscrew it to the sill, then air thecoinpressible sealing strip in the channel.

3. Draughtproof a letter-box opening byscrewing on a special brush seal. Checkthat it does nor foul the letter plate flap ifthis opens inwards.

4. Draughtproof the sides and top of thedoor frame by pinning (tacking) on plasticor sprung moral sealing strips. Pin the edge farthest from the doorstop head.

5. Alternatively, stick lengths of sell-adhesive foam excluder to the stop headagainst which the door closes. At thehinge side, stick it ro the frame.

6. A third option is to use lengths of self-adhesive brush strip excluder. These threetypes can also be used for draughtproofinghinged casement windows.
