Double Glazing Windows

The glass in windows is the leastefficiently insulated aspect of the house, and the only way of cutting the heatloss while still being able to see out isto add another layer of glass. Doubleglazing can be clone in two ways:existing panes of glass can be replacedwith special double-glazed panes calledsealed units, or a second pane can beinstalled inside the existing one so-called secondary glazing.

Secondary glazing is the onlypractical course of action unlesss theexisting windows are being completelyreplaced. There are dozens of types available for do-it-yourself installation, providing hinged and sliding inner panes that blend in well with most types of window; similar systems arealso available from professionalinstallers. The panes are either fixed tothe window frame itself, or else fitwithin the window reveal on specialtrack. An eftective but flimsyalternative is clear acetate or PVC(vinyl) film fixed to the inside of theframe with double-sided tape.

Apart from reducing heat lossesthrough the windows, double glazingeliminates 'cold spots' in the room nextto the windows. It also helps to reducenoise penetration from outside as longas the inner panes are kept closed. Itwill reduce condensation too, but only if the inner panes are well sealed totheir track to stop wants moist airgetting into the air gap between themand the window itself. Lastly, lockabletypes will give a measure of additionalsecurity; burglars may tackle one paneof glass, but many will flinch at two.

As far as external doors areconcerned, solid doors offer betterinsulation than glazed ones, so go forthis type if planning a replacement. If aglazed panel is a must, choose one witha sealed double glazing unit using safetyglass. I lent loss through any externaldoor can be reduced by building aporch outside it, to create an airlockbetween the house and the outdoors.

FITTING SLIDING UNITS

1. Measure the height and width of thewindow reveal at each side. If the figuresdiffer, work front the smaller measurements tor height and width.

2. Cut the track sections to length with a fine-toothed saw and sand the cut ends smooth. Make cut-outs following the kitinstructions to form corners.

3. Offer up the side track sections andscrew them in place. Use thin packing toget them truly vertical if the walls are outof square.

4. Next, secure the top track section inplace. Screw it directly to a wooden lintelor pre-drill holes in concrete ones andinset wall plugs first.

5. When positioning the bottom track on the windowsill, use a straightededge and a spirit level to check that it is perfectly aligned with the top rack.

6. Measure up tor the glass as directed inthe kit manufacturer's instructions, andorder the glass. Fit cut lengths of glazinggasket to the edges of each pane.

7. Fit the first pane inu5 the track byinserting its top edge in the top channel, and then lowering its bottom edge. Repeatthe procedure for any remaining panes.

FITTING THIN-FILM DOUBLE GLAZING

1. Start by sticking lengths of double-sided adhesive tape to the window frame, nbour 12 rum/1/2 in in from thesurrounding masonry.

2. Press the files on to the tape, pulling itas taut as possible. Then play hot air from a hair-drier over it to tighten it up and pull out any wrinkles.

3. When you are sure the film is evenand wrinkle-free, trim off the excess filmall the way around the window using asharp utility knife.
