HOW TO MAKE AN AUSTRIAN BLINDS

1. Cut out the fabric. Turn, pin, tack(baste) and stitch double 20 min/V-i in sidehems. Turn, pin, tack and stitch a double 20 inni/3/4 in hem along the bottom of the fabric. Press all the hems.

2. Fold the fabric, with the right sidestogether, vertically like a concertina atapproximately 60 cm/24 in evenly spacedintervals and press. The resulting Coldsmark the positions of the vertical tapes.

3. Pin and stitch a strip of Austrian-blindtape close to one of the side hems, turningtinder 12 mm/1/2 in at the bottom toneaten. Stitch another strip along theremaining side hem, then attach furtherstrips vertically at regular intervals acrossthe blind, aligning one edge of the tapewith the pressed folds.

4. Turn over 20 mm/1/4 in at the top of theblind and press. Pin the heading tape inposition, folding under the raw edges, andstitch in place.

CALCULATING FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

Austrian Blind

To calculate die length, measure thewindow drop and add 11 cm/21/4 in forhem allowances.

For the width, measure the width ofthe window and multiply by 2 to 21/2depending on the type of heading tapeused. Add 8 cm/3 in for side hems.

You will need enough heading tapeto extend across the width of thefabric, plus extra for turnings. You willalso need sufficient strips of Austrian-blind tape to position at 60 cm/24 inintervals across the width of the blind.Each strip should he the length of theblind plus 12 nun/1/2 its make surethere is a loop or ring 12 inin/Vt in upfrom t he bottom of each strip so thatthey will line up across the blind.
