Jesus the Messiah

In the four Gospels, Jesus is revealed as the long-awaited Messiah whose coming was foretold by the prophets. He left no doubt of his claim. He was the "son of God" of Psalms 2; the prophet predicted by Moses in Deuteronomy 18:15.But further than this, he claimed to be equal to God, to be God visiting earth in the form of a man. He said that if they have seen him, they have seen the Father (John 14:9), for "I and my Father are one." John makes the point clearly in his Gospel: "the word (logos) was with God, and the word was God . . . And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us."

According to the apostle Paul, Jesus, "being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God"; that he was "made in the likeness of men"(Phil. 2:6-7; I Timothy 3:16). Both John and Paul credit Jesus with having been integral in the creation of all things visible and invisible in heaven and on earth (John 1:3; (Col. 1:16). Jesus told his accusers that his kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36), and "Hereafter shall the son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God"(Luke 22:69).

The risen Christ affirmed that "all power is given to me in heaven and earth"(Matt. 28:18). The disciples referred to Jesus as "Master and Lord"(John 13:13; Luke 24:3; John 20:13; 21:7), and they worshipped Him (Luke 24:52) . When he saw Jesus' wound Thomas exclaimed, "My Lord and my God"(John 20:28). After Jesus' ascension, his followers referred to him as "Lord and Christ"(Acts 2:36), "Lord Jesus Christ"(Acts 28:31), "Jesus Christ our Lord"(Romans 1:3), and "the Lord Jesus Christ"(James 1:1). In Revelation, an angel refers to him as "Lord of lords and King of Kings" and this name is on Jesus' vesture as he leads angelic forces in his successful battle against the evil forces (Rev. 19:16).
